The Road Ahead

Driving home the other day along the A11, I was on a new re-surfaced section and was really pleased by how smooth it was and a much quieter ride.

A few minutes later, approaching home on our country lane, I was taken into another world insofar as road surfaces are concerned. Gone was the smooth fresh tarmac, and now here I was on a lane with grass and earth causing quite a mound in the middle of the road and where the sides of the road were full of potholes and broken bits of road surface with the grass verges closing in!

This caused me to think about our lives, which sometimes seem to be smooth, stress free, when life feels good, and everything is going our way. A bit like driving on a lovely smooth road.

Other days and times are more like the lumpy, bumpy lane with potholes and obstacles cropping up where everything for you seems to be against you! The day perhaps is going wrong, or you’ve had some bad news, maybe the boss is on the warpath, even little things like the battery has run out on your ‘phone. To cap off your bad day the Visa card statement arrives, and you didn’t realise you had spent so much in the previous month!

I think, that if we’re honest, we all have these ups and downs, sometimes life is good, sometimes it can be a struggle. I remember when I was in Sunday School singing a chorus, “When the road is rough and steep, keep your eyes upon Jesus”.  So, whether the road is smooth or rough, we can be assured that God is with us.

Joshua 1:9 says “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go”.
