Palm Sunday

It’s funny how the mind works sometimes when you see something in a different way. Well, in thinking about Palm Sunday, for some reason my mind looked at the word ‘Palm’ and I wondered how many different words can I make from it by just using all the letters once. So, after a bit of head scratching, I could only come up with one word which was ‘lamp’.

So, what is interesting about that you may ask. If you look at the Bible references about that first Palm Sunday in the Gospels, we read where crowds gathered to greet Jesus and threw their cloaks on the road with palm branches as well. We read that the crowds also went before, waiting for Jesus to come along, again throwing the palm leaves and branches on the road making a path for the King.

In the book of Psalms, we read where it says Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105). Your Word is a lamp, a light, to show the way. The crowds on that day were shouting ‘Hosanna (save), blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord’. (Mark 11:1-11) They were fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah some 500 years before where we read in Zechariah 9:9, “Rejoice greatly …… . See your King comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey ….”

The crowd were waiting for a king to come, perhaps they little realised the importance and significance of the day.

That significance was that the King had come, to establish God’s eternal Kingdom, a reason indeed for them and us to be part of the greatest celebration of all.
